Jockey Road, Sutton Coldfield
Due to health challenges, Becky and Rob were transitioning from their current property so Becky could return to her mother’s home. However, her mother’s tall, terraced house offered limited accessibility modifications. The couple determined they needed an innovative solution that would provide additional space while accommodating Becky’s needs.
This project marked our first venture into creating a habitable garden room requiring planning permission. Including bathroom facilities and a kitchen necessitated these additional approvals despite the structure not being intended as a full-time residence.
To enhance accessibility, we implemented several thoughtful adaptations: lowering socket heights, widening doorways, modifying thresholds, and installing a wheelchair ramp. These features enabled Becky to navigate the space independently.
The project proved especially rewarding as it deepened our understanding of accessibility requirements, allowing us to create a truly customised space. The finished room features an elegant media wall with integrated lighting. The distinctive green Hardie plank cladding became a signature element that we’ve incorporated into subsequent projects. This verdant exterior blends harmoniously with the garden’s natural surroundings, creating a uniquely appealing garden room that stands apart in the market.
