The Summer House

Garden Room

Project Walkthrough

The Story

Monmouth Drive, Sutton Coldfield

We were approached by Paul & Sam in Sutton Coldfield to look at constructing a garden room for a recreational summer room/ office style set-up. On a site survey, upon scouting the location of where a new garden room would be positioned, our director, Tom, noticed a large oak structure that had been used as a pergola in the summer months. Immediately, the thoughts turned to questions about what this structure had been used for and what potential it might have to be transformed into a luxury garden room.

The specification was that the room was to be used through the summer and winter months; therefore, we leant straight towards trying to keep the structure as open as possible. This would be made possible with the use of Bi-fold doors and large format glazing so that the room still kept the original features of the pergola – but instead of being exposed to the elements, it was now a garden room that could be used all year round.

The roof system was the trickiest entity with this project, as we had to ensure sufficient insulation was there to accommodate the colder weather. We also opted to create a double Fascia- one in oak and another in anthracite UPVC- all whilst considering protecting the oak against weathering and UV damage.

The end result of this project is a marvel to the team. We are incredibly proud to have produced a room to this level of detail, especially with conserving the original oak structure. We also love the use of lighting within this project, as it really shows off the detail of the oak framing. Special thanks to Paul and Sam for letting us be part of the history of this building.
