Maney Hill, Sutton Coldfield
Andy approached us at the beginning of 2025 hoping to find a company willing to install a garden office at his home — but there was one major challenge: his incredibly steep garden. Situated on one of the hilliest roads in Sutton Coldfield, the rear garden certainly put our planning (and our legs!) to the test.
Where most companies saw an obstacle, Four Oaks Garden Rooms saw an opportunity. Andy envisioned his office positioned right at the top of the garden — a location that, while difficult to access, offered a stunning panoramic view across Sutton.
Structurally, the room itself was fairly standard, but the foundation required some clever engineering. The base was designed to sit high on stilts at the front and lower at the rear, resulting in a front elevation almost a metre above ground level. The next challenge was access: we needed to create a safe and attractive way to reach the entrance whilst negotiating that 1-metre slope.
Through careful planning and consultation with Andy and his wife Amy, we designed a tiered access solution featuring a welcoming landing area that doubles as seating, with wide-format steps leading gracefully up to the room. The result feels purposeful and natural, as if the room was always meant to sit proudly on its hilltop perch.
Now, from his office window, Andy enjoys a breathtaking view over Sutton Coldfield — we like to think he feels a bit like “King of the Hill” up there! Working from his new garden room has already proven more productive and enjoyable, especially with the excitement of a new addition to the family joining the household earlier this year.
A huge thank you to Andy and Amy for trusting us with your build — the team came away with fantastic memories… and thighs fit enough to scale Everest!
